Visio vs Lucidchart: which one fits your company
Visio is Microsoft's diagram tool. Lucidchart is the browser-first tool that grew up as its main challenger. Both draw flowcharts, org charts, network diagrams, and process maps. The right choice depends mostly on where your company already works.
Wavelength is a voice to diagram tool that turns a spoken process or a call transcript into an editable flowchart. It reads .vsdx files from both Visio and Lucidchart, so it works next to either tool.
We checked Microsoft's Visio pricing page and Lucid's pricing page on October 6, 2026.
The short answer
- Choose Visio when your company runs on Microsoft 365 and Windows, when you need formal notation such as BPMN 2.0, or when clients and partners send you .vsdx files.
- Choose Lucidchart when your team uses Mac and Windows, works in Google Workspace, Confluence, or Jira, and wants simple real-time collaboration in the browser.

Where Visio is better
Formal diagrams. Plan 2 includes BPMN 2.0, IDEF0, engineering, electrical, and P&ID templates, and rules to check a diagram against a standard. If an auditor or a process engine reads your diagrams, Visio is the safer choice.
The Microsoft stack. Diagrams export into Word and PowerPoint, sit in OneDrive, and open in Teams. Org charts can come from Excel, Exchange, or Microsoft Entra ID.
The file format. .vsdx is the common language of diagram tools. Lucidchart, draw.io, Miro, and Wavelength all import it.
Where Lucidchart is better
Any computer. Lucidchart runs in the browser on Mac, Windows, and Linux. The Visio desktop app is for Windows.
Ease of use. Most people can make a clean flowchart in Lucidchart in their first hour. Visio has more depth and a steeper learning curve.
Non-Microsoft tools. If your team lives in Google Workspace, Confluence, and Jira, Lucidchart fits that world better.
Who usually picks each one
Visio is common in large companies with a Microsoft enterprise agreement, in engineering and facilities teams, in government, and in regulated industries that need BPMN or formal process standards. IT teams that already manage Microsoft licenses often pick it because it is one more line on an existing contract.
Lucidchart is common in software companies, in teams that mix Mac and Windows, and in teams that live in Confluence and Jira. Product managers, engineers, and consultants who share diagrams with many outside people often prefer a browser tool with simple sharing.
Many companies end up with both. That is not a failure. It usually means two groups have two real needs.
Moving between them
Lucidchart imports and exports Visio files on Individual, Team, and Enterprise. Lucid's help center says each document exports one at a time, from More, then Export, then Visio (VSDX). Lucid also notes that the only link type that survives a Visio export is a link to the web.
Wavelength imports .vsdx files from either tool, and you can drop up to 50 files at the same time. Each file becomes an editable flow. See how to switch from Lucidchart.
Where Wavelength fits next to either one
Visio and Lucidchart both start from a blank canvas. Somebody must already know the process to draw it. Wavelength starts from the conversation. You talk through the process, or you paste a call transcript, and Wavelength draws the flow, with any AI guesses shown as dashed amber lines until you confirm them.
When the flow is right, export it. Wavelength exports BPMN for process tools, and draw.io, PowerPoint, PDF, PNG, and Mermaid for everything else. Many teams capture the process in Wavelength and keep the formal version in Visio.
When Wavelength is the wrong tool
Wavelength does not draw floor plans, network racks, electrical schematics, UML, or ERDs. It only makes process and data flows. It also does not check a diagram against BPMN rules the way Visio Plan 2 does. If you need a validated, formal diagram, finish it in Visio. See Wavelength vs Visio.
