Wavelength Try the live demo

Swimlanes from the workshop conversation, BPMN when you need it.

Wavelength is for business analysts and process consultants. You map the current-state process in the workshop, switch to the Lanes view to see it by role, and export BPMN 2.0 for Camunda Modeler or bpmn.io when the client needs a formal model.

The usual way to get a swimlane diagram is to draw it by hand after the workshop. You collect the sticky notes, take the photos, and sit down in front of Visio or Lucidchart. The lanes are where the errors creep in, because you assign each step to a role from memory and the person who could correct you left the room two hours ago.

How it works

  1. Map the process live in the workshop. Hold the mic and facilitate the walkthrough as you normally would. The actors, steps, decisions, and systems appear on the canvas as they are mentioned.
  2. Switch to the Lanes view. Each step goes in its owner's lane. The owner comes from the conversation when someone is named, or from the nearest person upstream when the step does not name one.
  3. Validate in the room. Share your screen and let the participants correct the lanes and the steps while the people who do the work are still there.
  4. Export BPMN 2.0. Choose Export and then BPMN 2.0 for a .bpmn file that opens in Camunda Modeler or bpmn.io.

What is in the BPMN file

The export includes a pool, one lane per role, tasks for each step, exclusive gateways for each decision, and start and end events. The layout is set so the tool shows it without a re-layout. It is a documentation model, not an executable one.

Other exports for the same model

Not every client wants BPMN. draw.io and Mermaid are both available as exports from the same flow, so you can hand over whichever format the team already uses. The flow on the canvas is the source of truth, and every export regenerates from it.

See how to document a current state process for the full method, and the ERP implementations page for how this fits a fit-gap program.

Where it does not fit

Wavelength does not do process mining from event logs. If you have clean event data from a source system, a process mining tool like Celonis answers questions a workshop cannot. Wavelength covers the human walkthrough, which is where undocumented workarounds surface.

It also does not do formal BPMN modeling with events, timers, and message flows. The export gives you tasks, gateways, and events in the right layout. If you need the full BPMN symbology, add that in Camunda Modeler or bpmn.io on top of the file Wavelength produces.

Common questions

How does the Lanes view work?

Each step goes in its owner's lane. The owner comes from the conversation when someone is named, or from the nearest person upstream when the step does not name one. You can switch between the vertical, horizontal, and Lanes views at any time.

What is in the BPMN 2.0 export?

A pool, one lane per role, tasks for each step, exclusive gateways for each decision, start and end events, and layout so Camunda Modeler or bpmn.io shows it without a re-layout. It is a documentation model, not an executable one.

Can I also export to draw.io or Mermaid?

Yes. draw.io and Mermaid are both available as exports alongside BPMN 2.0. Use whichever your team or your client prefers.

Is the BPMN file executable in Camunda?

No. It is a documentation model with the correct elements and layout, not an executable process. You would add the execution details in Camunda Modeler yourself.

Does this replace process mining?

No. Process mining reads event logs from a source system. Wavelength captures the human walkthrough of the process, including workarounds that never make it into the logs. They answer different questions.
